Nine years passed! But we Indians cannot forget the most frightful days in the Indian history. On November 26, 2008, Mumbai was shaken by terrorists at hot spots of the city namely – CSMT railway station, Oberoi Trident Hotel, Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Nariman House, Leopold Cafe and Cama and Albless Hospital. There were few brave hearts who stood like a wall and fought against terrorism saving other’s lives by donating their lives. Let us look at them at a glance:
1) Tukaram Omble:
This assistant sub-inspector and a retired army employer was honored with Ashok Chakra! Catching terrorist Ajmal Kasab alive was impossible without him. Later this lone terrorist survivor was sentenced to death.
2) Hemant Karkare
Chief of Mumbai Anti-Terrorist Squad was awarded an Ashok Chakra on 26th January 2009. He fought against terrorism in Cama and Albless Hospital along with other officers namely Salaskar and Kamte. Karkare along with his team started firing the terrorists on the spot. During rapid fire, Karkare’s AK-47 fell down and he then got eliminated by terrorist Ismail Khan.
3) Ashok Kamte
When the terrorists attacked their jeep he was only one who reacted to their firings. This man along with Salaskar and Karkare lost their life when the terrorists sprayed fire on them. He was rewarded with an Ashoka Chakra on January 26, 2009.
4) Vijay Salaskar
Inspector and encounter specialist (Mumbai Police) Vijay Salaskar had encountered 75-80 criminals. This brave man was honored with Ashok Chakra on 26th January 2009. He was the head of Anti-Extortion Cell also. Salaskar gave his life while battling with the terrorists.
5) Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
This Indian Army Major was also granted with Ashok Chakra on 26th January 2009. The team of 10 commandos was lead by him to filter the terrorists inside the hotel premises. Unfortunately a terrorist shot him from behind and he surrendered to his injuries.
