The human brain is one of the most amazing parts of the human body and you will be amazed to know how much memory it can store. Who needs a pen drive when u can store everything in your brain itself. Let’s dive in to find out how much our brain can actually store.
In an average adult , the human brain can store trillions of bits of information. A Stanford study reveals that the cerebral cortex alone has 125 trillion synapses and 1 synapse can store 4.7 bits of information (1 bit=8 bytes). Guess, what that amounts to ? 1 TB ( Terabyte). If you are all familiar to “megabytes” and “gigabytes” , you can easily assume that the storage capacity is over 74 TB in the cortex alone. The human brain is reported to have over 2.5 petabytes of memory capacity. (1 petabyte = 1024 terabytes ) . Do the math fellas.
Sounds confusing ? Amazing ? I know, both. Our brain stores exactly everything we have ever studied or heard, seen or listened to and it never deletes. But we fail to remember most of it . You know why ? The human brain takes 11 million bits of information per second but is aware of only 40 bits. This is why you can study a whole chapter for the first time and remember almost nothing.
Indeed , the human brain is a marvel and has more capabilities than you can imagine. With all the studies and newer technologies, we can only assume to find out the full capacity and many more capabilities of the brain.
One last fun fact – After we die , our brain is alive for 7 minutes and plays every memory like a dream sequence. Mind blowing.
